Junior Research Group "Computational Nanophotonics"

Welcome to the "Computational Nanophotonics" Junior Research Group led by Jens Förstner (link to CV) .

With quantum theories covering several areas of physics we describe the interplay of electrodynamical, electronic and thermal/vibrational effects in solids structured on the nanometer scale. A particular focus are nonlinear optical properties of these nanostructures. Current systems under investigation are:

  • Dynamic and nonlinear properties of electrodynamical metamaterials, e.g. Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) from metallic split ring resonator arrays (SRR). 
  • Energy and coherence transfer in photonic structures like photonic crystal cavities, coupling to quantum dots.
  • Pulse shaping and geometry optimization in nanophotonic systems, like design of nanoantennas and other plasmonic systems.
  • Efficient algorithms for the simulation of complex nonlinear electrodynamic problems, e.g. on the basis on the Time-Domain Discontinuous Garlerkin (TD-TG) method, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) or Time-Domain Coupled Dipole (TD-CDM) method. Transformation and auto-tuning for High-Performance-Computing (HPC) platforms like CPU/GPU cluster.
  • Decoherence processes during the optical excitation of solids (quantum dots, wells, etc) with classical and quantum light.
