Hochdruck-Festkörperspektroskopie

  • Magnetismus unter hohem Druck in metallischen 3d und 4f-Systemen, so den RM2 Laves-Phasen 
  • Komplexer Magnetismus zwischen verschiedenen magnetischen Untergittern 
  • Valenzübergänge und high-spin/low-spin Übergänge unter hohem Druck

Mössbauerspektroskopie (ME)
Der Mössbauer-Effekt basiert auf der 1957 von R.L. Mößbauer entdeckten rückstoßfreien Emission und Absorption von Gamma-Quanten durch Atomkerne, die in Festkörpern eingebunden sind. Aufgrund der hohen Energieauflösung und ihres lokalen Charakters ist die Mössbauer-Spektroskopie besonders gut geeignet, magnetische, elektrische und auch strukturelle Festkörpereigenschaften und ihre Änderung durch äußere Einflüsse wie z. B. Temperatur und Druck zu studieren. 
Der Arbeitsgruppe stehen die Mössbauerresonanzen von 57Fe (14.4 keV), 151Eu (21.5 keV) und 155Gd(86.5 keV) zur Verfügung. Zu den aktuell untersuchten Materialien gehören magnetische Laves-Phasen vom Typ RFe2 (R = Ti, Sc, Y, Lu, Gd, Dy, Ho), Europiummonochalcogenide EuX (X = O, S, Se, Te), und intermetallische Systeme wie R2M2X2 und und R2MX3 mit R = Eu, Gd, ..., M = d-Metall, X = Si, Ge.  Im Mittelpunkt dieser Untersuchungen stehen oft komplexe magnetische Eigenschaften, Valenz- und strukturelle Phasenübergänge als Funktion von Druck und Temperatur. 

Kernvorwärtsstreuung (NFS)
Die Kernvorwärtsstreuung (Nuclear Forward Scattering, NFS) ist eine neue Methode, die sich in den letzten Jahren als "Mössbauer-Spektroskopie mit Synchrotronstrahlung" etabliert hat. Die Nutzung von Synchrotronstrahlung zur Anregung von Mössbauerniveaus der Kerne führt dabei zu erweiterten Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in der Hochdruckphysik mit Diamantstempelzellen für Drücke jenseits von 1 Mbar. Aktuelle Forschungsgebiete sind magnetische Lavesphasen RFe2 sowie Europiumchalcogenide EuX (X = O, S, Se, Te). Diese Untersuchungen werden, wie auch die im nächsten Abschnitt aufgeführten inelastischen Kernstreuexperimente,  an der Europäischen Synchrotronstrahlungsquelle (ESRF) in Grenoble durchgeführt. 

Inelastische Kernstreuung (NIS)
Unter Ausnutzung der charakteristischen Eigenschaften der Synchrotronstrahlung hat sich mit der inelastischen Kernstreuung (Nuclear Inelastic Scattering, NIS) seit 1995 ein neuer Zweig der Festkörperspektroskopie entwickelt, der eine umfassende Untersuchung der Gitterdynamik verschiedenster Proben ermöglicht. Dabei wird direkt die lokale Phononenzustandsdichte des benutzten Mössbauerisotops in einem polykristallinen Festkörper gemessen. Für monoatomare Festkörper wie Eisen ist damit eine komplette thermodynamische Charakterisierung des Festkörpers möglich. Die Arbeitsgruppe hat diese neue Methode erstmals für Hochdruckuntersuchungen bis in den Megabar-Bereich angewandt. Dabei wurden die Phononenzustandsdichten von Eisen in der kubischen und in der hexagonalen Hochdruckphase bis 1.5 Mbar untersucht. Da hexagonales Eisen auch im Inneren der Erde vorliegt, haben diese Untersuchungen, aus denen u. a. auch die Schallgeschwindigkeiten bestimmt werden können, wichtige Bezüge zur Geophysik. Diese Untersuchungen werden gegenwärtig an texturierten Proben fortgesetzt. Dadurch ist es möglich, richtungsabhängige Phononenspektren (parallel oder senkrecht zur c-Achse) wie sie sonst nur mit einkristallinen Proben zu beobachten sind, zu erzeugen. Damit lassen sich z. B. die optischen Moden im Phononenspektrum eindeutig zuordnen und auch die Schallgeschwindigkeiten richtungsabhängig untersuchen. Aktuell auch unsere Untersuchungen an Invarsystemen, so die lokale Zustandsdichte in Fe65Ni35  als Funktion von Druck und Temperatur.

Röntgenabsorption (XAS)
Mit Hilfe der Röntgenabsorptionsspektroskopie (X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, XAS) werden in der Arbeitsgruppe unterschiedlichste Materialien elementspezifisch auf ihre strukturellen, gitterdynamischen und elektronischen Eigenschaften im Temperaturbereich von 10 K bis 300 K untersucht. Hochdruckuntersuchungen bis 15 GPa können mit neu entwickelten Hochdruckzangen mit besonderen Stempelmaterialien im Energiebereich von 6 keV bis 35 keV am HASYLAB in Hamburg und an der ESRF in Grenoble durchgeführt werden. 
Aktuelle untersuchte Systeme sind: Gd@C82, Dy@C82; A2BC60 (A, B = K, Rb, Cs), RbC60;  SnO, SnO2; Er:LiNbO3, (Ti,Er):LiNbO3;  Gd2/3M1/3MnO3 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba); ROCl (R = La, Pr, Gd); a-Al32Ge68; Cs2PdI4·I2, Cs2PdBr4·I2

Röntgendichroismus (XMCD)
Röntgenabsorptionsuntersuchungen, die den zirkularen magnetischen Dichroismus nutzen (X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism), liefern element- und schalenspezifische Informationen über Verteilung von Spin- und Orbitaldichten im Festkörper. XMCD-Experimente wurden an den Meßplätzen ID24 an der ESRF bzw. am A1 am HASYLAB unter hohen Drücken und tiefen Temperaturen durchgeführt. Die Hochdruckuntersuchungen wurden erst durch die oben vorgestellte Hochdruckzange ermöglicht. 
Aktuelle Materialien sind: GdFe2, LuFe2, Gd3Fe5O12, GdMnO3

Röntgenbeugung (XRD) Die seit langem etablierte Methode der Röntgenbeugung (X-Ray Diffraction, XRD) beruht auf der Streuung von Röntgenstrahlen an den Elektronen der Kristallatome. Durch Überlagerung (Interferenz) der gestreuten Strahlen ergeben sich Beugungsmaxima, aus dessen Lage die Gitterparameter und der Gittertyp der Einheitszelle des untersuchten Kristalls bestimmt werden können. Anstelle der klassischen Röntgenapparaturen im Labor wird für Hochdruckuntersuchungen  zunehmend Synchrotronstrahlung verwendet, so mit der energiedispersiven Methode am Meßplatz F3 im HASYLAB (gemeinsam mit der Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. W.B. Holzapfel) oder mit der winkeldispersiven Methode an der ESRF.   Mit Kenntnis der druckabhängigen Änderungen der Gitterparameter bzw. der Kristallstruktur können die Zustandsgleichungen für diese  Materialien bestimmt werden. Zudem kann mit Hilfe der Röntgenbeugung Reaktionskinetik in sito unter hohem Druck und hoher Temperatur untersucht werde, um Zwischenprodukte, Übergangstemperaturen und Übergangsdrücke zu bestimmen.
