Cryogenic integrated photonics

A variety of different active optical components can be realised in lithium niobate. In order to build interesting systems with a desired performance, we try to integrate multiple components on one chip. The key feature for high system efficiencies is to integrate superconducting detectors directly on the chip, which require operating temperatures below 4K. Therefore, we test all our active and passive optical components in the temperature range from 300K to 0.8K.

Lithium niobate enables optical modulation because of its electro-optical effect. The refractive index can be manipulated by applying an electric field in the area of a propagating light beam in the material. Together with a fabricated domain poling structure, devices such as a polarisation…
