Theoretical Optoelectronics & Photonics Group

led by Stefan Schumacher (link to cv)

Our research focusses on the interaction of light with matter and many-particle physics in semiconductor (nano)systems. Fields of particular current interest include nonlinear polariton physics in semiconductor microcavities, multi-exciton states in semiconductor quantum dots and nanocrystals, and optical excitations in organic (molecular) semiconductor systems.

Based on microscopic many-particle theories, we use light as a probing tool to gain insight into excitation dynamics and optical properties on ultrafast (femtosecond) timescales. Beyond pure basic research, we use our understanding of nonlinear light-matter interaction to envision strategies for novel light manipulation schemes such as all-optical amplifiers, switches, and lasers. If you are interested in more details, please take a look at some of the recent publications.

The group was established in July 2010. As part of the Physics Department, we are embedded in a stimulating local theory and experiment environment, and we work closely together with leading international theoretical and experimental groups in the field, e.g., at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and University of St Andrews (both United Kingdom), and at the University of Arizona, United States, and Chinese University Hongkong.

If you are interested in joining the group as Bachelor or Master student, please get in touch. We always have interesting problems to work on.
