Today, our group member Timon Schapeler gave a guided tour of the laboratory for interested female Technikantinnen. The young women from the NRW-Technikum, who have just graduated from high school, were given an insight behind the scenes of a research institution. During the tour, we were able to demonstrate what we work with every day in quantum optics. The participants were able to see how we work with laser radiation to generate single photons and then detect (i.e. measure) these with the help of superconducting single-photon detectors. Finally, they were able to use an alignment laser to test how light is guided on an optical table.
