The European Research Counsil (ERC) supports the research at the University of Paderborn with 3.91 Million Euro in the next five years. Prof. Dr. Christine Silberhorn and Prof. Dr. Thomas Zentgraf awarded each with an ERC Consolidator Grant.
At this year's NOEKS conference in Dortmund we had the chance to meet Prof. Mark Fox from Sheffield University. Lot of students might know Professor Fox based on his famous books "Quantum Optics" and "Optical Properties of Solids".
Our master student Daniel Frese will start a five month internship at the University of Birmingham (UK). In collaboration with Prof. Shuang Zhang's group new Metamaterials for manipulation of light propagation will be explored. The internship is supported by the ERASMUS+ program of the EU.
The experimental physicist Prof. Thomas Zentgraf and his two colleagues from the University of Birmingham, Dr. Guixin Li and Prof. Shuang Zhang, proved for the first time experimentally the nonlinear rotational Doppler effect of light - nearly 50 years after its theoretical prediction by the Dutch Nobel Laureate Nicolaas Bloembergen.
Our master student Bernhard Reineke visits for a two weeks period the POSTECH in Pohang (South Korea) to learn more about modern nanotechnology fabrication methods for Metamaterials. The collaboration with the group of Prof. Junsuk Rho at the Deartment for Mechanical Engineering is financially supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The illumination of the nanostructures with right circular polarized light (+σ) of wavelength λ generates a second harmonic wave with λ/2. The rotation of the structures with respect to each other with an angle θ generates an additional phase. Hence, the structures send out the nonlinear light under an angle, the 1st diffraction order. Each structure generates hereby a left circular polarized wave –σ and a local phase ϕ = 3σθ, which is only determined by the rotation angle.
