New Publications | Polarisation and topological effects in coupled optical systems

Three research groups at the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems and the Physics Departement of Paderborn University  – Theory of Functional Photonic Structures (Prof. Dr Stefan Schumacher), Ultrafast Nanophotonics (Prof. Dr Thomas Zentgraf) and Theoretical Quantum Science (Prof. Dr Jan Sperling) – have made progress in the field of modern photonics in their latest work. In two publications, the researchers investigated how light can be…

Recognising heavy metals in soil and water: New method for on-site analysis

As part of an international team, scientists from Paderborn University have developed a new method to quickly and accurately detect toxic arsenic variants in soil and water. The study, which was published in the journal "Nanoscale" of the Royal Society of Chemistry, shows how simple technologies can replace expensive laboratory procedures and enable rapid on-site analysis.

New Publication | Self-assembly of isolated plasmonic dimers with sub-5 nm gaps on a metallic mirror

In a collaboration between Paderborn University and Hallym University in South Korea, we developed a simple self-assembly based method to fabricate low density of dimer Au NPs on a metallic film over a large area of substrate by utilizing a virus-like biomaterial, M13 bacteriophage.

Our fire drill

Safety always comes first and fires cannot be ruled out even in our laboratories. So we took advantage of the nice weather and conducted a fire safety drill again after a long time. This includes not only knowing how to behave in an emergency, but also how to use the fire extinguishers. Many thanks to Mr. Hohrath from Department 5 for the professional instruction.

Metasurfaces enable miniaturized optical pulse shaper

Material dispersion accumulated in optical setups tends to heavily distort and chirp ultra-short laser pulses which can be especially disadvantageous in nonlinear optical applications or pump-probe experiments. In our recent publication ‘Compact metasurface-based optical pulse-shaping device’ published in Nano Letters, we show that multiple metasurfaces on a single glass substrate can be used, to alter the dispersion of ultra-short laser pulses…
